A RACI matrix can be an important tool for Project Managers.
It allows for a strategic simplification of the roles and responsibilities of
those involved in the project. Agile methodologies allow for quick changes to
the roles and responsibilities of team members as a project evolves and needs
change. Using a RACI matrix allows for project stakeholders and team members
understand who is responsible, who is accountable, who is to be consulted and
who needs to be informed of which tasks involved in a project. Establishing
a clear understanding of who is responsible and who is accountable for specific
tasks helps reduce confusion, facilitates communication and collaboration and
can help lead a project to faster completion.
R = Responsible – Who is assigned and responsible for the task
A = Accountable – Who is accountable for the task and
must sign and approve work
C = Consulted – Who are the subject matter experts to be consulted
I = Informed -- Who are the team members who need
to be updated regarding progress and notified of results
How is RACI useful?
1. It helps the project
manager and key players know visualize and know if some people have been given
too many or too few responsibilities.
2. It reduces
miscommunications by providing a visualization of who is accountable and who
needs to be consulted for what tasks.
3. It helps project
managers organize a communication plan and meeting schedule that involve only
the necessary team members. This saves time and as well all know time is money.
